In simple terms, musculoskeletal transplantation is used when there is a hole to be filled. That hole can be large or small, and in bone, articular cartilage (gristle), or soft tissue. Examples of such situations would include:
Bone tumours
Articular cartilage defects
Knee ligament reconstruction
Spinal fusion and/or correction of spinal deformity (scoliosis)
Revision joint replacement
Arthrodesis (fusion) of joints
Fracture non-union
Etc...(there will be plenty I have missed!)
